IPD 503: Design Fundamentals
The creation of a successful product requires the integration of design, engineering, and marketing. The word design is descended from the Latin designare, "to mark out" (de- + signare, to mark). For purposes of this course design is defined as a creative act marking out a synthesis based on observation, interpretation, and translation. The primary purpose of this course is to introduce fundamental concepts in the design of three-dimensional objects.
Design fundamentals include basic skills and techniques of representation: description, projection, and fabrication. Hand sketching and drawing, digital modeling, and rapid prototyping technologies are utilized in the course to create and develop two-dimensional drawings, three-dimensional virtual models, and simple prototypes.
The course fulfills the Design Arts background course for the interdisciplinary program in Integrated Product Design (IPD).
