Island of Paros: Discovery of artifacts in the Aegean Sea

During the summer, Zahra Elhanbaly, a major in Architecture with a minor in the History of Art, traveled to the Greek island of Paros to study artifacts discovered in the Aegean Sea. Her travel and study were supported by an internship from the Penn Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program. Under the mentorship of Mantha Zarmakoupi, the Morris Russell and Josephine Chidsey Williams Assistant Professor in Roman Architecture, Elhanbaly spent two weeks documenting details of these ancient objects through a variety of methods--hand sketches, highly-detailed architectural renderings and a series of photographs. Of the wide array and numerous artifacts that have been discovered in the Naousa Harbor, Elhanbaly's research and drawing abilities were focused on three sizable marble capitals, the topmost support feature of a column that connects it to the structure above. Elhanbaly continues to work with Zarmakoupi, who is in the process of preparing a volume of essays which will include the architectural renderings, drawings, and photographs produced by Elhanbaly during her internship experience.
